Until recently, hair removal and skin rejuvenation were painful and time-consuming procedures. Aesthera Photopneumatic Therapy (PPx) has changed all this!
Symmetry Salon & Spa is very pleased to be the first in the area to introduce the revolutionary Photopneumatic Therapy (PPx) PAINLESS hair removal and skin rejuvenation treatments. The Photopneumatic Therapy is a safe, effective, FDA approved and PAINLESS method of laser hair removal, photo rejuvenation, vein treatment and acne treatment.
What is PPx Therapy?
PPx Therapy is a breakthrough aesthetic treatment that uses a revolutionary combination of pneumatic energy and broadband light. PPx treatments are no pain treatments that are clinically proven effective and safe treatments for:
Hair removal
Acne
Age spots or brown blotchy pigmentation of the skin
Broken capillaries or broken blood vessels that cause "redness"
Telangiectasias or fine facial veins.
How is PPx different from other laser and light based treatments for hair removal and skin rejuvenation?
There are several key differences between PPx and other laser and light based skin rejuvenation and hair removal treatments.
1. PPx Therapy is painless because it uses the latest breakthrough PPx technology. This latest breakthrough uses a fraction of the energy that other treatments require. This means it is gentle and very safe.
2. PPx Therapy does not require any pre-treatment with anesthesia or numbing gels.
3. Treatments are faster. PPx therapy is 4 to 7 times faster than treatments with other laser or light based technologies.
4. PPX treatments are more hygienic with no risk of infection.
5. Treatments are relaxing and not associated with side effects such as the redness or other usual post treatment discomforts.
Is the procedure safe?
Yes, PPx Therapy is very safe. As a matter of fact, PPx Therapy is up to 5 times more efficient in the concentrated delivery of energy, so it uses a fraction of the energy normally used. This makes it safer and pain free compared to other treatment modalities.

As the above graph indicates, when compared to other treatment technologies, PPx therapy uses lower overall energies. Energy is concentrated in the target to be destroyed, protecting the surrounding normal tissue. As a result, PPx therapy is associated with no pain and is up to 5 times safer than traditional laser treatment methods.
PPx therapy is painless because energy is concentrated in the target to be destroyed, protecting the surrounding normal tissue. This also makes PPx therapy safer than other treatment modalities.
Treatments are relaxing and not associated with side effects such as the redness, crusting or other usual post treatment discomforts*. PPx therapy is 4 to 7 times faster than treatments with other laser or light based technologies. It does do not require pre-treatments with topical anesthetics or cooling gels, resulting in reducing treatment time by 35 - 45 minutes.
Have patients been happy with their results?
Yes, patients have been extremely happy with their results from PPx Therapy. According to a recent clinical study, 100% of patients surveyed noted that they would choose PPx over previously experienced laser and light based treatment for skin rejuvenation and hair removal (Novel Photopneumatic therapy delivers high-efficiency photons to dermal targets, Vic Narukar, MD, Vol 18, No 2, Feb 2005, Cosmetic Dermatology).
How does PPx feel?
PPx therapy’s patented process combines the unique properties of therapeutic light with pressure (pneumatic energy) to bring you a breakthrough method for the treatment of unwanted hair, uneven pigment and unwanted veins. You will feel a gentle and warm sensation as your skin is drawn into the treatment tip. A very gentle light energy will be applied to the treatment area. Immediately after that, you will feel your skin being gently released back into normal position. Patients describe the sensation as being similar to that of a warm massage.

Do I need to take time off work to recuperate?
Treatments are relaxing and do not include side effects. With PPx therapy, you can go right back to your normal activities, including going back to work, immediately post treatment.
Will I need anesthesia?
No. PPx Therapy is a no pain treatment and no anesthesia or numbing creams are necessary!
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments varies with the condition being treated. Typically, hair removal may require between 3-7 treatments while treatments for aging and sun damaged skin may require 5 treatments. The number of treatments also varies from person to person and for different body parts.
The PPx Technique
Step 1 The treatment tip is placed on the area to be treated.
Step 2 The area to be treated is gently drawn into the treatment tip, bringing the unwanted hair, acne lesion, red and brown pigment or unsightly veins closer to the skin’s surface.
Step 3 Light energy is gently applied to the area being treated.
Step 4 Unwanted hair, red and brown pigment, acne lesions or unsightly veins are quickly and painlessly destroyed, leaving the skin with a fresh and clean youthful look.

The PPx acne treatment in action. |

Roughly 17 million people in the United States suffer from acne, a dermatological condition that causes whiteheads, blackheads, red bumps, or cysts to appear on the skin's surface. Acne is most prevalent in teenagers going through puberty, but it also affects a small portion of adults.
The condition occurs when sebaceous glands in the pores become clogged with large amounts of sebum, a type of oil that moistens the hair and skin, as well as dead skin cells and bacteria.
To prevent nasty breakouts that are commonly caused by acne, experts recommend gently washing your face twice a day with soap and warm water. Wearing oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizers, sunscreens and makeup can also help. For mild-to-moderate cases of acne, experts recommend using products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, as these ingredients kill the bacteria while drying out the skin.
When acne becomes very severe, there are several measures patients can take to cure it and reduce the appearance of red spots. Chemical peels help acne patients by removing dead skin cells and stimulating new skin growth. Potential side effects of this procedure include red skin, blisters, scaling, scarring and infection. Microdermabrasion is another procedure that requires a dermatologist to use a handheld device to blow crystals onto the skin and polish the skin's surface. Doctors can also prescribe patients a combination of topical creams and oral antibiotics to stop acne in its tracks.
Now, researchers say there could be a better, more effective way for people to battle acne. A recent study by researchers at Johns Hopkins revealed 85 percent of participants had clearer skin after using the PPx Pore Cleansing Acne Treatment, a system that was recently approved by the FDA. PPx therapy begins when a dermatologist uses a device to gently vacuum the skin and suck up extra oil. A broadband light is then used to zap away any impurities.
"The suction really unclogs the pores, which allows the oil to flow more normally to the surface," Dr. Gilly Munavalli said. "The light helps kill the bacteria that cause acne."
Patients who have undergone the procedure say there was no blistering and only a small amount of facial redness, which resolved itself a few hours later. Experts say the new approach is less painful than other laser treatments because lower levels of energy are needed to accomplish a similar task. Most patients need roughly five treatments spaced two weeks apart. Each treatment costs $350, and a follow-up visit is necessary three months later. Each session lasts 30 minutes, and the results can last for up to a year or more.
Rebecca Midkiff developed acne when she was in her 20s and underwent PPx treatment to cure her irritated skin. Overall, she's been very happy with her results.
"The thing I noticed right away was my skin was not oily," Midkiff sais. "It's already working, and that's something you don't see with another treatment."
Dr. Dale Isaacson, a dermatologist at DC Derm Docs in Washington, D.C., says PPx treatment may be a good alternative to traditional treatments like Accutane, which has bad side effects.
This gives us another tool we really didn't have before," Isaacson said. "A good 25 percent or 30 percent of patients don't respond to conventional therapy and need something else."

How many treatments are required?
All hair does not grow at the same time. Hair follicle growth activity is cyclic, and each hair follicle behaves independently. An average of 20-30 percent of hair are in the active growth phase (anagen stage) at any given time. Therefore, during a laser session, only these hairs potentially can be permanently destroyed.
Regular monthly treatments are necessary in order to progressively target hair in the growth phase.
